Processing E-M1 mkII files…and other random notes.

So far Adobe has published “preliminary support” for the E-M1 mkII.  That means you can basically edit the files, but the profile and raw rendering is not finalized.  I have also found that the High Res RAW files are not yet supported either.  Lightroom doesn’t even recognize the ORI file.  Hope this comes soon, I already have a project lined up requiring this…

Also, Really Right Stuff will hopefully be opening preorders by the end of the year for a correct L-Plate for the camera.  With a proper plate the camera is still only partially usable.  I am making due with a generic bottom plate at the moment.

Funny how we are always so excited to get the latest camera…but in reality true usability and support won’t happen for at least a month or two.  It would be great if camera makers worked together with the third party vendors to get specs and dummy cameras in the hands of makers to get their tooling or software ready.

I have also found that the E-M1 mkII doesn’t necessarily like old slow cards.  Having shot with an SDHC card that “just met” the specs for big 4K video, the camera would take a while to read the card, and then do a restart kind of sequence before coming to life.  This would only happen after the card was mostly filled.  I just received two 64gb and one 32gb SDXC II cards of the fastest speeds available and this behavior completely disappear.  Wow are these cards fast!  B&H Photo has a great deal on Lexar Pro cards.  2 64gb SDXC-II cards for $52. These cards are plenty fast as well.  I recommend them.  I seem to go back and fourth between Lexar and SanDisk pro cards. If you are getting this camera, spend a little extra and upgrade your cards.  Or at least one main card.  If you do photo, a 32gb card will fetch you around 1300 images.  An SDXC II 32gb card is down around $20 at some places.

More to come!

  1. Change the .ori extension to .orf and you should be able to work with this file in post.

    • The latest version of lightroom still rejects the file, even if you rename the extension. So no luck here yet. I am hoping this gets updated soon since there are no color profiles yet either.

  2. Hi Tony. happy new year!
I have lightroom 5-5.7 and it obviously won’t open
my raw files with the olympus omd em1 mk2..
I read somewhere that the lightroom 5-6.8 firmware update
will open the raw files and also the hi rez files as well? hmmm”
Would you know if it will work or not. And also heard olympus site has a free
firmware download raw converter? Just wondering if it will work on
    my lightroom 5
    Thankyou for your time Tony.
    Cheers all the best. Mike

A work-around for you would be to use the free Adobe DNG-converter program that lets you create a DNG (pseudo-raw) file from most cameras, so that you can then still use the older Lightroom version with the DNG. Worth a try!
