iPhone 5 Camera in Thailand

I recently got back from spending a couple weeks in Thailand. Awesome place, awesome people, awesome food, awesome weather, awesome everything. That story is for another post however. I really have been trying to travel as light as possible. I had no checked baggage this time and it was great. I did have two cameras and a tripod with me, but I also thought I would give the new iPhone 5 camera a spin and see how it held up.

Surprisingly, if you are careful, you can make some fantastic images with the iphone 5.

I generally use Camera+ app to shoot and edit my shots. This program allows some flexibility with locking exposure, focus, and white balance, as well as selecting where to meter from. This is a huge help. The iphone might be all auto…but if you can tell auto where to do its job from you can actually get some what controllable results. I would also balance the phone on my tripod or anything else nearby and use the self timer to take shots. Again, this makes a huge difference.

Another app I found useful was Pro HDR. It is an HDR merging program that actually works very well compared to the build in HDR feature on the iphone camera app. I used this app a lot in wide dynamic range scenes.

A final app I use is Alien Skin’s “Alt Photo” app. If you know of their Exposure software, this is basically it for the iphone. Some great toning features and film replication.

If you follow my twitter or facebook you may have already seen a few of these images as I was posting from Thailand. Otherwise, here is a collection of images shot with the iPhone 5 camera! And no worries, I will be posting some images shot with my usual gear soon in another post! Til then, enjoy!
